Chapter 7

Arnold White opened his eyes.

At first he wondered vaguely where he was, and then he remembered!

The lethal chamber!

He must have fallen asleep after Greach and the other man had gone. It was quite dark. He couldn’t see a thing. He had no idea of the time or how long he had slept. Not that it mattered much. What did matter was that he was in a dangerous position and the thing to do was to try and get out of it before it was too late.

But that was easier decided on than done.

He tried again to loosen the cords that bound his wrists. If he could get free…?

But there was no better result than before. They had been tied too tightly. And his fingers weren’t much use. They were so numbed that he could hardly feel anything, and his feet and legs were like lumps of lead.

He gave it up at last and lay still, breathless.

It seemed pretty hopeless. If he couldn’t free himself there was precious little he could do.

There was just a chance that Trevor Lowe would come in search of him when he found that he had failed to come back to Mrs Jowler’s. But it was the barest possible chance. And even if he did, would he think of looking in the lethal chamber?

It was true that he was already suspicious of Greach and he had ordered White to watch the lethal chamber for the man he believed was hiding there.

But would he take action in time?

Arnold had no idea how late it was. If it was already dark outside, they might turn on the chloroform at any moment. After that it would only be a matter of minutes.

He was quite helpless, trussed up like a chicken. He couldn’t even shout. The gag was fastened too tightly for that.

It was a bleak prospect and he felt his courage ebbing away. But he realised that he’d got to grit his teeth and keep on hoping. To take his mind off the thought of the chloroform, he forced himself to go over what had happened. Who was the man in the raincoat? Without doubt he was the guiding power in the whole business.

It might have been Glenister. He was the right build, but his voice had been so muffled by the handkerchief, or whatever it was that had covered his face, there was no clue to be got from that.

He wondered if they would come back before the end, but concluded that it was unlikely. This train of thought led him to speculate on how the chloroform was to be admitted from the outside tank. He remembered that there had been a pipe leading downwards which had entered the wall of the lethal chamber about a foot above ground level. Trevor Lowe had pointed this out. There had been a kind of stop-cock in the pipe…

A sudden thought struck him. If he could find the end of the inlet pipe where it entered the chamber it might be possible to block it in some way.
